Here a POM POM, there a POM POM, everywhere a POM POM!

Hi! :)

If you recall from my last post, I recently went to a baby shower.  My family and I had decided to do some decorating! My cousin N went to party city to buy decorations so we had a lot of things ahead of time.  Well, after I arrived, we still needed to run and get a few things, so we headed to the dollar store hoping they would have them there.  While I was there, I had the idea to make homemade pom poms!  I had seen it on pinterest (of course, right), and I felt this would be the best time to try it! I didn't really want to give away my plan, so I was worried Cousin N would feel overwhelmed with having to deal with it, so I showed her a picture and said, "I think I'll make this."  So we got the tissue paper, and a bazillion other things, and went on our way.  We had multiple errands so we actually didn't get up getting home till about 6 pm (we left around 12pm).  So, first things first, we all ate dinner.  Then cleaned up, and then, GOT TO WORK.  I mean I had to figure out how to make these things, and had to make quite a few!  I used DIY Pom Poms which I found on Pinterest as my guidelines.

So to work I went, the first one I made myself, so I could figure it out, (I work much better when people aren't telling me a million things, or giving me their version). Once I had that down pat, I put my family to work.  My Mama, Mami, Mom, and Dad could not for the life of them figure out how to fluff these things I kept calling "Pom Poms".  So a little more explaining and they finally got it.  It was very fun and took us about a  hour!  I did make a few changes, I used inly four sheets per pom pom, and cut them in half, as well as 1/3 & 2/3 for a little variation.  According to the directions you needed multiple sheets (8-9), to make the big pom pom, and I just didn't buy enough tissue paper for that, so I modified :)

This is the family at work:

Then Cousin N was luckily enough to find a branch that would really work well with the pom poms in the morning, and viola we were finished.  It was a lovely piece, and everyone complimented how wonderful it looked.

Pros:  Easy to do, multiple combinations possible, and pretty much any color you want, great last minute idea
Cons:  Can not get wet, could take some time if alone (depending on how many you are going to make)
Changes for next time: I would use different hues of the same color, or some polka dots and strips, use more than 4 sheets, maybe up to 6.  I like the smallness of these but think that some big ones would be adorable! Really just mix it up!
Total cost: $1.00

Bhabhi's adorable baby shower!

This past weekend our family drove for miles to attend one of the many wonderful celebrations we have going on for 2014!
Bhabhi S's baby shower!
The planning for the baby shower had been going on for some time, with multiple menu and guest list changes, as well as decoration changes.  As the big day approached, Ba began to feel bad, and started vomitting, so sadly she was admitted the entire week before the big event!  Luckily she was discharged the day before, so everyone was very happy about that, especially Ba, because it was very important to her to be able to see the ceremonies associated with the baby shower.

In Indian tradition, we have a prayer/ceremony that helps us celebrate this aucipious occasion.   We are promising our self, our family, and God, that we will put the baby, and their well being first.  We will be careful with our words, and thoughts, as everything can be heard and felt by the baby.  We thank him for giving us this special gift.

The brief version of the ceremony:
We first bring God into the house before we start such an occasion.  Seen here:
My mom is in green! Mom's sister on the left.         Mom's sister in law helping them.

My mom's brother helping guide them.

Once that is done, we say a small prayer, and read many things, as well as sholkas (verses from the Gita).

There are many steps in between, but I do not have photos for them, so explanations are tougher :/
Next,  chandlos (small red dot) are applied to each other, and chandlo's on the mom-to-be's feet. Then we do the exchanging of rice & coconut between mom-to-be, and her sister-in-law.  This happens about 7 times, each time giving less and less, being very careful not to drop any grains.

After this part is over, the ceremony has concluded.  The parents-to-be will bow to all of the elders in the room, asking for their blessing today and always.  Afterwards, there is lunch.  After lunch, we had a few games planned: 1) Our rendition of "The price is right" using baby items, 2) Baby stats & Predications (for guessing when the baby will come and the sex of the baby), 3) Unscrambling baby words (which was a tough one), and 4) a word search!  Afterwards, they cut the cake, opened gifts, and baby books which were requested instead of cards. We thanked God for blessing this wonderful occasion! And of course, a few pictures!

 Cake Cutting!

 Thanking God!

Of course Niece L, had to make an appearance!

As well as Niece A & Nephew E

Here is their lovely family!

We love you both very much, and are looking forward to your amazing little bundle of joy!

I hope that you guys enjoyed this post today! All of the pictures are courtesy of Bhabhi S & Cousin T. All of the descriptions of the ceremonies are a brief synopsis, and the customs may vary region to region.

Till next time!

Stir fried noodles with veggies and tofu!

A few years ago, I was living in Carbondale, IL  (for school) and drove to Cincinnati to visit my Cousin K and her husband Y, as well as Didi (cousin A).  It was a long weekend, so I had planned to stay with both of them for a few days, but mainly stay at my Cousin K's house.  Cousin K and I are not first cousins, or second, but are related somehow which I always forgot.  Regardless of how we are related, I think of her as a first cousin/sister.

Cousin K is an excellent chef, and started her own company, Green Eats, while she lived in Cincinnati.  Currently, Green Eats is on hold while she & her husband currently live abroad in Germany.  She enjoys being challenged as a Chef, and does a wonderful job! Since I am a vegetarian, she was more challenged to think of fun things I would enjoy eating! And, boy, oh boy did she do just that!

While visiting with her, she made a quick recipe of Stir fried noodles with veggies and tofu for lunch on the day I was leaving to head back to IL!  It was so amazing, and wonderful, that a few years later I had to recreate it because the flavors were engrained into my brain.  So yummy!

I texted her for the recipe, and as the awesome Cousin she is, she sent it ASAP! I did double the recipe for the sauce, and made it a little spicier than what she had listed!  It turned out phenomenal.  My parents and I ate all of it, without any leftovers, and have already got requests from them make it again! So, of course, I am looking forward to making this again!

I have linked her recipe through google drive,  Cousin K's recipe for Stir Fried Noodles with veggies and tofu :). You will be required to sign in with your own gmail account so that you can view it.  Unfortanuely, blogger will not allow me to upload a pdf so this is the best work around I could find.  If you would like to try this recipe or other recipes of hers, head on over to Cousin K's blog, which she keeps updated while living in Germany!

Pinterest Success!

Hi!
So today I wanted to blog about a recent project that I completed.  I found it on pinterest, and was seriously excited about doing it.  The original idea came from here: Knitting Loom Infinity Scarf
Her directions were great, and pictures were nice, but I am more of a "if I see it, I can do it" kind of girl, so I hunted for a youtube video and found one that was perfect for me. Found here: Knitting Loom Infinity Scarf VIDEO!

These directions were spot on for me, and once I had my "equipment" to start, I was ready to go!  I really wanted to finish the scarf while it was cold enough to wear,  so I had to get a jump on it.  Also, I live in NC, and honestly the weather changes in the blink of an eye.  Like last week it was in the 20s and 30s, and then the weekend was in the 70s!

Anyway, I did not remember to take a picture of the "equipment" but the first link will show you that.  I bought my yarn from a Walmart, and got two skeins as stated, I do recommend that you make sure its soft and comfortable for you.  My yarn was made for babies, so it is incredibly soft :)  I absolutely love the color of it!  Here are a few pictures to show you of my progress!

Viola! All finished!

This is the length of the scarf doubled (about 3 feet, so 6 feet total)!

This scarf was a little longer than I expected, but it works great for me.  I wanted something that would be warm and lie flat while wearing.  I have gotten tons of compliments on it, and am very happy with the results.  I have plans of making a coral colored one very soon!

A quick post on my adorable niece!

As promised, here are a few pictures of my Niece L.  Her family arrived at our place on Tuesday evening, and left early Friday morning.  We got to spend just a few extra hours with her, and boy was it worth it.  She is the sweetest little social butterfly I have ever meet, and love her to pieces.  Here are a few pictures to show how much she has grown:

She is a MAC girl all the way, just like her Puja Masi!

Her Grand-ba really loves her.  She is just super nervous about holding her! Sorry for the blurry images, we were snapping fast!

She wanted to try her hand at rolling out some pizza dough!
 So we let her! :)
One of her favorites things, pushing her legs and giggling with her!

Doesn't she just make your heart all ooo-weee and gooo-eeeee!
